![]() ![]() About 40 percent of them have vanished since 1970, along with three billion birds. We are all aware the songbirds are on the decline. I’m sure raking disturbs them somewhat, but leaf blowing totally annihilates them. Tucked in those leaves are lots and lots of teeny tiny caterpillars that overwinter in the leaves. It’s good exercise, and the crisp fall days are absolutely exquisite, but there’s another reason, and it’s important. Like I try to snatch the leaf piles before the town picks them up, I try to rake my yard before my husband blows the leaves. And that very afternoon it is covered with a thick mat of more leaves. ![]() He blows leaves all morning, revealing a pristine driveway. We have about seven huge oak trees in our front yard, and their leaves drive my husband crazy every fall.
